Jubilee Beacon, Thursday 2nd June

The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Beacon

Thursday 2nd June

There has been a long tradition of lighting Beacons to celebrate Royal Jubilees.  On 2nd June 2022, we will celebrate another unique milestone in our history, Her Majesty The Queen’s 70th year as our Monarch and Head of the Commonwealth – her Platinum Jubilee. It is a feat no previous monarch has achieved.

To celebrate this event in Mary Tavy we will be lighting a Beacon on Gibbet Hill.  The Beacon will be lit at 9.45pm, the same time as many Beacons around the country.

You are welcome to join us on Gibbet Hill for the lighting.  As this event is taking place on open Moorland we ask those coming to follow a few “do’s and don’ts”:

  • Please note that there is access on foot only and there is strictly no access for vehicles.
  • Please where possible walk from home. If you have to drive to get closer there is no parking provided and we ask that you park sensibly on the road only and not on any moorland.  Be careful to not cause any obstruction.
  • Please bring a torch – it will get dark!
  • To be sure to protect the Moor we ask that you have no naked flames and no fireworks are allowed. (We will be taking many precautions to ensure that there will be no escaping embers/flames from the Beacon itself.)
  • We are welcome to bring refreshments with you but please remember to take all your litter home with you.
  • If you bring your dog with you it must be kept on a lead at all times.
  • There will be Marshals at the event so please listen to them and follow any instructions they give.

If you unable to join us on the Hill, have a look out for the Beacon – hopefully you can get a good view from several places, the end of Recreation ground may be good place – you should be able to see the Brentor and Peter Tavy Beacons from there as well.

If the weather is too dry or too wet or too windy we may have to move the Beacon  – if that happens we will put information out on the website and Facebook as soon as we can, so please check there.

Remember the Beacon will be lit at 9.45 so join us then.  We look forward to seeing you there.

Attendance is at your own risk.
