An Update On Full Fibre Broadband Provision In Mary Tavy Parish

Many of you will have seen Openreach and their contractors working around the parish to begin installation of full fibre broadband to properties (known as FFTP). At present the wider infrastructure is being put in – this is a mixture of overhead cables and trenching that brings fibre to the edge of each property in the current scheme. This work should be completed by mid-August and includes the majority of properties in the parish.

While it would be nice for Openreach to contact households and invite them to access FTTP, this is not how it happens.

Each household needs to go online at https://www.openreach.com/fibre-checker. From there, enter your postcode and select your house name/number from the dropdown list. This will tell you whether FTTP is now ready for order or give the option to “tell me when it’s ready” by clicking the appropriate box.

If you select the “tell me when it’s ready” option, in theory Openreach will contact you when FTTP is available but in practice this doesn’t always happen so it’s best to check back every week or so until you get the message that you can now order FTTP.

Once it’s available and if you then choose to order FTTP, an Openreach engineer or approved contractor will visit to bring fibre into your property. There should be no charge for this. In general, the fibre cable will be installed along the route of the current copper wires although there may be occasions when a different route will be more practical.

You do not have to be a BT customer or buy a BT package to have this happen – most internet providers have an arrangement with Openreach and it will still be Openreach that complete the installation. While not a guarantee, Openreach expect all eligible properties to be able to request connection by the end of September 2026.
