Dartmoor Gliding Society – Burnford Common, Brentor

Dartmoor Gliding Society is a small but very friendly club located on picturesque moorland in beautiful South Devon within sight of the very well known Brentor Church.

Our Club was founded in 1983 by a small group of enthusiasts with a twin seat open cockpit glider with a wooden hut to keep it in and a lot of energy to carve out a runway on the top of Burnford Common.

From these humble beginnings the club has steadily progressed to become the thriving gliding community it is today. The club now boasts a well cared for grass runway, a refurbished club house and a purpose built hangar to house the club fleet of 3 twin seat training gliders and 3 single seat gliders.

Launching is via a winch, which tows gliders up to a height of 1000 feet or more. Once airborne, pilots are always on the lookout for thermal air currents to keep them aloft. However, when the wind blows across the moor from the East, a special type of lift called ‘wave’ is generated, enabling flights as high as 16,000 feet or more to be achieved.

We welcome visitors of all ages and abilities from absolute beginners to world champions. If you are new to gliding have a look at the What is Gliding page of the website to find out a little more and then check out the Trial Flight page to see how little it costs to experience this fascinating sport.
