Avian Flu

An Avian Influenza Prevention Zone (AIPZ) has been declared across Great Britain effective from 5pm on 3 November 2021. The AIPZ means all bird keepers in Great Britain (whether they have pet birds, commercial flocks or just a few birds in a backyard flock) are required by law to take a range of biosecurity precautions.

Changes in Farming: ELMS and FIPL

The UK Government is introducing the Environmental Land Management Scheme (ELMS) later this year. To quote the Government:

“The Environmental Land Management (ELM) scheme is the centrepiece of the Government’s new approach to farm support, as well as being key to delivering its environmental ambitions. Over the next seven years, the new scheme will be piloted and then fully introduced, while EU-style direct payments will be phased out”

There is a great deal of information and discussion on ELMS available on the internet. Some useful starting points are:

In addition to ELMS, the Farming In Protected Landscapes (FIPL) grant scheme has been launched. To quote the Dartmoor National Park Authority:

Farming in Protected Landscapes is a grant scheme for farmers and land managers in National Parks and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONBs).

The programme, developed by Defra, and delivered locally through Dartmoor National Park Authority, supports farmers and land managers in carrying out projects that support the natural environment, mitigate the impacts of climate change, provide public access opportunities or support nature-friendly, sustainable farm businesses.

The programme runs from July 2021 until March 2024 and the funding is front loaded available in 2021 than in remaining years.
